Topic – IoT meaning, applications, origin, other complete details

We all are familiar with the word “Internet”. It’s been here for a long time. It is just an interconnected network that is used for communication and getting information. Let’s get into IoT meaning.

By making things connected to the internet, the technology in computer science has made automation a lot easier.

In today’s era, the internet is not just about connecting people. It’s about connecting things. And this gave birth to technology named the Internet of Things.

Let’s see what is IoT meaning and few more information about it.

By letting the IoT devices into our everyday life, it is not like we entered the zoo, but we released the animals into our world.

What is IoT meaning?

In very simple language things which are connected to the internet are called the Internet of Things.

We as human beings communicate, contribute, and collaborate with other people through our five senses: Eyes, Nose, Ear, Skin, and Taste.

Imagine things with the ability to sense, listen, communicate, and act with other things.

This is where the “internet of people” and “internet of things” intersect.

Things + Ability to sense, touch, communicate and control via the internet = IoT

What are the examples of IoT?

Examples of objects that can fall into the scope of the Internet of Things includes

connected security systems, thermostats, cars, electronic appliances, lights in household and commercial environments, alarm clocks, speaker systems, vending machines, and more.

Consider the most familiar and obvious example of your smartphone. It has many sensors embedded in it.

It knows your location. It knows how you are holding it. It ca sense your movement. Can predict the intensity of light in your room. The phone knows how close it is to your face.

Knows what you are saying to it. It even has an eye through which it can see its surroundings. It can communicate with other devices too.

This is the most familiar IOT example and satisfies IoT meaning too.

Consider another example of a smartwatch. It tracks your steps, your activities, your heartbeat count, your health.

It knows about your sleep, fitness level, your location, and many others.

The best things are we have a lot of tools and equipment to add sensors to existing things and make them connected to a network

Imagine a scenario where you forgot to switch off the AC in your room.

If your AC is connected to the internet then after some time you will get a notification on your phone about it. You can then, turn it off from the phone itself.

In a similar manner, your doors can be locked automatically, windows can be closed and many other tasks can be automated using IoT technology.

Such things consist of sensors and detectors which read the information from its environment and act upon it.

You can buy this book called “Getting started with Internet of Things” by Cuno Pfister. This book is great if you are looking to start building your own IoT models. It requires basic programming skills and affordable electronic devices. The author teaches in a very simple and efficient way from start to end including everything.

What is the history of IoT?

After knowing about such great applications one might be interested to know about the History of IoT.

What were the important projects and people that helped it in becoming one of the most trending topics of today’s era?

Father of IoT

Kevin Ashton is known as the father and founder of IoT. The term “Internet of Things” was coined by him in 1999.

The intention was to promote RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. Also, he was then the executive director of the Auto-ID Center and a co-founder of MIT’s Auto-ID Lab.

Ashton discovered it while working on a project presentation for Procter&Gamble (in the context of RFID supply chains). He pioneered RFID use in supply-chain management.

Ashton then started a company Zensi that makes monitoring technology and energy-sensing.

Even though Kevin grabbed the interest of Procter&Gamble executives, the term Internet of Things did not get widespread attention for the next 10 years.

The actual concept of connected things was at least since the 70s. Back then, this technology was known by terms like “Embedded internet” or “pervasive computing.

This technology wasn’t popular in the 2000-2010 decade. It started gaining popularity and reached the mass market in the early summer of 2014.

Today the term Internet of Things is around 20 years old.

Ashton coined it in 1999 and wanted to attract management’s attention to a new technology called RFID.

Also as the internet was the coolest trend at that time, Ashton called his presentation “Internet of Things”

(Also it makes sense somehow with actual IoT meaning).

Back then it was said that the StreetView service by Google – which invented the 360-degree pictures.

This service stored tons of data of people’s wifi networks.

People debated whether this was Google’s new strategy to index the physical world along with indexing the internet.

The same year, the Chinese government declared to include IoT as a strategy in their five-year plan.

Even Gartner(market research company known for the famous hype-cycle for emerging technologies) mentioned the “Internet of Things” in this list of famous emerging technologies.

In the next year popular tech-focused magazines like Fast Company, Forbes, and Wired starting using IoT to describe the phenomenon.

The technology reached $100 billion in market revenue in 2017.

In October 2013, IDC published a report stating that the Internet of Things would be an $8.9 trillion market in 2021.

And as per forecasts, this figure will grow to around 1.6 trillion by 2025.

These devices collect and share information from sensors about how they are used.

Sensors are embedded in every IOT device which “talk” to the cloud through some kind of connectivity.

This sensors continuously emit data about working state of that particular device.

IOT provides a Big Data platform for all this devices to dump their data.

It provides a pathway for them to communicate with each other.

Data emitted from various sensors is sent to IoT platform.

Once the data reaches the cloud, software processing starts. Their data is integrated from various sources and data analytics is performed.

Valuable information is fetched from the analytics as per requirement. Or adjusting the sensors/devices automatically without the need for the user.

This output is shared and used for other devices to learn and improve efficiency.

A complete IoT system integrates four distinct components: sensors/devices, connectivity, data processing, and a user interface.

What is IoT Ecosystem?

The ecosystem of IoT consists of various kinds of devices that enables businesses and consumers to connect to their IoT devices.
